Summer Home Maintenance Checklist

Summer is many peoples favorite season, and for good reason, kids are out of school, summer tourist destinations like theme parks and beaches are open, and warm weather has finally returned. Summer also brings a host of challenges to our homes, hot weather, storms, and increased wear and tear from summer activities are just a few.

Summer may be full of activity and life but it also brings a host of challenges.

Early Summer

Inspect and clean washer and dryer

Before the heavy summer laundry season starts, make sure your washer and dryer are working properly. Clean the outside of each unit, the inside and your dryer vent.

Prepare your pool

Get ready for the summer grilling season by getting your grill ready. Clean the exterior, if propane make sure the burners work and be sure your propane tank is full.

Prepare your pool

Nothing says summer like swimming pools, if you have a pool make sure it's ready for the summer. Sweep clean the pool deck, make sure all safety equipment is in working order, stock up on pool chemicals, and make sure the pool chemistry is correct.

Inspect and service all lawn and garden tools and equipment.

Make sure your summer garden tools and equipment are in good working order, nows a great time to get your lawnmower and other lawn equipment ready for the summer mowing season.

Inspect and service all summer recreation equipment

Before the busy summer recreation season inspect and service all recreational equipment. If you own power equipment, like boats, ATVs, and other similar equipment now is a great time to service those vehicles.

Inspect garage door

Garage doors see a lot of use in the summer, before the summer season becomes too busy, inspect your garage door for proper operation, lubricate track and hinges if needed.

Inspect siding, exterior trim and exterior window sills for rot

Do a simple lap around your home and look for rot in the exterior of the home. Schedule repairs if needed.

Inspect fences and gates

If your home has a fence and gate(s) give them an inspection. look for loose posts and pickets, rot, and failing paint.

Wash Siding

If needed, now is a good time to wash the exterior of your house so it looks its best for the rest of the summer.

Mid and Late Summer

Irrigate lawn and garden if needed

As the summer wears on the temps are likely to rise and the amount of rain likely to drop. Irrigate your gardens and lawn as needed.

Prevent insect breeding grounds

Nothing spoils a summer afternoon on the patio or deck like a bunch of hungry mosquitoes. Prevent these by eliminating standing water in your yard.

Clean downspouts and gutters

If needed clean your downspouts and gutters.

Perform any large exterior jobs

Whether DIY or hired complete any large exterior jobs such as roofing, painting, or window repair or replacement.
